GWM-1 is the research claim. Characters is the shipped surface.
Runway introduced GWM-1 as a general world model spanning generated worlds, avatars, and robotics-oriented directions. The May 2026 Characters rollout is the clearest product-facing evidence: a character-agent surface available through Runway apps and API for subscribers.
That is not the same as Marble's persistent 3D world or Genie's playable environment preview. The company belongs on this map because video tools are moving toward stateful characters and worlds, not because Runway has shipped a general simulator.

Boundary
An avatar product is not proof of an explorable world.
Characters can be real, useful, and still leave environment state, navigation, and 3D export unproven. This page exists so GWM-1 does not get cited as a public world-building platform.
Compare with EMO when the question is controllable humans in video. Compare with Marble when the question is a place.
How to verify
Read the research post, the Characters post, and current model availability.
Runway Research, Runway News, and the help article on available models are the primary sources. Subscriber access and API details should be taken from current help docs, not from the GWM-1 headline.
